Research Initiative

In partnership with King’s College London, Medical Research Council UK, the University of Zimbabwe, and the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne Island engaged in four studies as detailed below:

1. Multimorbid Ageing Primary Palliative Care (MAPCARE) in Ghana, Malawi, and Zimbabwe. The multi country study seeks to understand and develop a feasible and acceptable model of primary integrated palliative care for older patients facing multimorbid serious illness in sub-Saharan Africa.
2. NIHR Global Health Research Group on Global Health and Palliative Care (GHAP): expanding access in Uganda, Zimbabwe, and South Africa. In Zimbabwe, the aim is to develop a model of integrated cancer palliative care that is appropriate and acceptable and to determine the feasibility of an RCT evaluation design.
3. Health Systems strengthening through person-centred care: development of a feasible and acceptable theory-based workforce approach to improve quality. It seeks to answer the question “What is a feasible and acceptable model of person-centred care (PCC) for patients and families facing serious illness in sub-Saharan Africa that can strengthen health systems through a workforce approach?
4. EpiPhone: Island collaborated with Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne to apply to conduct a study which seeks to evaluate the usability and signal quality of a novel inconspicuous wearable device for epileptic monitoring.
