care

At Island, we transform the journey through serious illness by providing compassionate palliative care that goes beyond treating symptoms. We focus on improving quality of life for patients and families facing life-threatening conditionsβ€”from cancer and heart disease to neurological disorders and chronic illnessesβ€”by addressing physical pain alongside emotional and spiritual needs. Our early intervention approach means better comfort, dignity, and meaningful moments from the very start of your diagnosis, because healing isn’t always about curingβ€”sometimes it’s about caring.

Compassion

Since 1979, Island has stood by families during life’s most challenging momentsβ€”whether facing chronic illness, sudden loss, or traumatic events. We believe our first duty is to care, which is why we offer both compassionate counseling and expert clinical support when a life-threatening diagnosis feels overwhelming. For over four decades, we’ve helped patients and families navigate these difficult journeys with dignity, understanding that healing comes not just from medical intervention, but from knowing you’re never alone.

Impact

Island’s comprehensive programs span from bereaved children’s support and widow support groups to professional training and mentorship for healthcare workers. As a recognized center of excellence, we combine direct care with cutting-edge research, including NIH-funded studies on Kaposi’s Sarcoma outcomes, validation projects with King’s College London, and MRC Global Mental Health initiatives focusing on young carers in Zimbabwe. Our dedicated monitoring and evaluation team ensures every program delivers measurable impact, strengthening both individual lives and the broader healthcare system across the region.

What the Community say about Us

Anonymous Patient

Island Hospice transformed my life from being a bedridden paraplegic to regaining basic mobility. With physiotherapy, home exercises, and a walker they provided, I can now move around the house and ease the burden on my wife. Beyond physical care, Island also supported my mental health and strengthened my family. They trained my wife and daughter in patient care, helping my daughter shift from resentment to confidence and compassion. This restored harmony at home and dignity in my role as a father and husband. I am truly grateful to Island Hospice.

Tanaka Machida Patient

Island Hospice gave me dignity when I thought all hope was lost. Their nurses treated me like family, not just another patient. I found peace knowing my pain was finally understood

Edwina Pullen Patient's Daughter

Island Hospice brought us a sense of comfort through a very sad and difficult time, when my dad was diagnosed with cancer. They were able to assist us with equipment needed and answer any questions we had. Dr Mujuru is a walking angel. Her kindness and patience with both her patients and their families is beyond words can express. Thank you Island Hospice for all that you do. πŸ™πŸΌπŸ©·

Clara Dhliwayo (59) Traditional Healer From Mutare

BLENDING TRADITIONAL MEDICINE WITH PALLIATIVE CARE After palliative care training by Island Hospice in 2023, I now combine traditional medicine with modern practices like blood pressure checks and pain management. This integration has improved patient comfort, respected cultural and spiritual needs, and equipped me to also train caregivers in basic care. I am grateful to Island Hospice for enhancing my practice and the quality of life of my patients.

Ethan Reed Founder & CEO of XpeedStudio

The training workshops Island Hospice provided equipped our rural clinic staff with essential skills. We can now offer basic palliative care services to our remote community. Their mentorship continues to guide our practice
